the album cover of En Todas Partes by PETSSS
my friend victor asked me to make cover art for his new EP and it’s finally out so i can tell you guys about it! also LISTEN TO ITTTTTT if you’re at ALL into techno, he’s amazingggg (plus deception features glial cells)—it’s on spotify, bandcamp, and soundcloud. you can follow victor on insta @/victor_trumpets ^_^ now see me talk about my art
about the cover art: i took a nepheline syenite thin section and put it in XPL to bring out its interference colors, then overlayed the albite twinning from a labradorite slide (so my thanks to my school’s mineral collection!)—this was all done by tracing and editing pictures taken with a leica xpl microscope in procreate. i played around with color and orientation for a while with a lot of input from victor until we landed on this! i’m happy with it and the part i think is cool and the reason i was so excited to tell you guys about it is that i basically made a frankenstein mineral—this is something beautiful, made up of two real minerals, that couldn’t occur in nature. it’s taking the art of the rocks i’m looking at and creating my own!
side note: i knowwwww the text isn’t lined up perfectly and it’s driving me CRAZY i sent a second file with it fixed but it’s off by a single pixel so i don’t think he spotted the difference T_T i’m still really happy with how it turned out though!!

one of the talks today was about the end-Permian extinction (the biggest mass extinction by FAR) and while the extinction itself is super interesting it made me curious about the stages of reef recovery in the Triassic. here’s a paper i’m reading (not finished with yet) about it: https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geology/article/51/11/1011/627616/Prolonged-and-gradual-recovery-of-metazoan-algal

a diagram of a crinoid's anatomy. on the left a full crinoid is pictured with the root, stem, theca (head), and arms labeled. on the left the plates of the theca are drawn out as though seen from above to illustrate the organization of the infrabasal (bottom), basal (middle), radial (upper), and oral (mouth) plates. the central plate has a bump to indicate the stem attachment. every aspect of the crinoid has 5-fold symmetry. image from the 1911 Enclyclopdia Britannica, Vol. 8
anatomy of a crinoid (note the five-fold symmetry throughout the body!)

from the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, Part T:

Morphologically the crinoid organism is divisible into several major parts: the stalk or column (here labeled “stem”), the theca which may be divided into the aboral cup or calyx, and an oral membrane or tegmen, and pinnule-bearing arms or brachia. The crinoid organism consists of a very voluminous body wall and only a relatively small body cavity. By far the largest part of the body cavity is lodged in the theca and only extensions of it consisting of small canals penetrate the stalk, arms, and pinnules. The bulk of the volume of the several internal organs systems is found in the central body cavity of the theca. The crinoid body wall is supported by a voluminous mesodermal endoskeleton, the form of which determines the total shape of the organism. Describing the crinoid form is practically the same as describing the form of the skeleton. …
The infrabasals of crinoids normally form a circlet of five small plates at the aboral¹ pole of the theca. They are disposed in radial position and rest upon the topmost columnal². …
The basals are primarily five in number, forming a circlet near the aboral pole of the theca between the circlet of infrabasals and the circlet of radials, with both of which they alternate, being interradial in position. The basals have synostosial sutural contacts with both infrabasals and radials³. …
Regularly crinoids have five radials arranged in a circle in the cup. The radial circlet may be interrupted by primary interradials and by an anal plate…The radials alternate with the basals and are connected to them with sutural contacts of synostosial type. Each radial is followed by a series of brachial plates⁴, with the first of which it has a muscular articulation⁵.

¹ opposite the mouth
² stalk segment
³ fancy way of saying that they’re fused together
⁴ plates connecting arms (brachia) to the theca
⁵ these muscles allow it to move its arms around to grab at food and pull it toward the mouth!

the paleo event was super fun! i’m not going back for the third day since lectures were only yesterday and today. i learned a lot, filled out gaps in things i already knew some about, and got to practice the art of interpreting others’ research (not so simple as you’d think!). i also got to hang out with some other members of the geoscience department at the department’s booth in the vendor tent, which meant getting super sweaty but also a lot of fun conversations and asserting the supremacy of invertebrate paleo over vertebrate paleo (the event was very cretaceous-vertebrate-heavy). really good two days but now i’m super tired!

notes: today’s talks were super interesting and i now know about two new species that i can’t say anything else about because the paper hasn’t been released… it was so secretive, no pictures or recordings and you can’t post any details about it until it’s published. i’ll definitely share the paper here when it’s out! the first talk tomorrow is about the end-Permian extinction and i don’t want to miss it but it means i have to leave super early!!! going to bed soon so i’m well rested for the morning

i’m feeling grateful for… music :) such a wonderful thing to have such easy access to
notes: tomorrow i’m going to a big event with a ton of talks about the Permian (and some adjacent periods of time). today my schedule was all off because i woke up late and it ended up really messing with my whole day, but i’m taking it as a lesson learned and hoping to wake up early enough tomorrow not to miss any of the talks! it’s about an hour drive so i have to leave around 8 T_T

i’m looking forward to… a relaxing night :)
i’m feeling grateful for… BEING PROPERLY MEDICATED FOR ADHD
notes: i came downstairs to journal and accidentally did all the dishes. being medicated is so crazy. i also achieved my one Big Thing for today, which was drawing this hellishly complicated coral for my cnidarian lab. i was hoping to finish the lab but i needed to switch gears, i’ve been doing labs for hours every day all week! i spent today working around the house and also just taking some time off instead. i’m feeling proud because the dishes have been a looming task that i never QUITE caught up with, and now i’m finally caught up on both dishes and laundry (the two big sisyphean household chores) and can just do a little at a time instead of having to dedicate hours or days to catching up. i’m feeling good! work is going well… i’m organizing the geoscience department’s storage room because the movers just dumped boxes wherever and i found a little valentine’s day bear that i got to take home with me. on top of that i was moving around the art that will eventually get hung back up around the building and there was this beautiful illustration of a nautilus that apparently no one wanted? huge haul today

current mood: happy! ◠‿◠
current music: bag of bones by mitski
current beverage: coffee! a nice medium roast—i usually drink dark
current activity: resting between work and homework
goal for today: make progress on my cnidarian lab
i’m looking forward to… watching a short documentary about incapacitants later
i’m feeling grateful for… my job! started working again today
notes: started work today! i technically have had this job since last august but got too busy to work during the school year, so i went through the rehiring process last week and finally started today. i’m organizing boxes and filing old records in a REALLY dusty room but it’s independent and i’m by myself so it’s really the ideal job for me. i’m going to be working 10 hrs a week, which is totally manageable and leaves me plenty of time to work on my paleo labs. i’m also trying to wake up earlier and work in the mornings to get my sleep schedule on track for the fall semester (i have an 8:30am class!)

 life updates i’m excited about!
  • i’m getting set up to do research from fall 2025-spring 2026! i have an orientation for the research program tomorrow and am getting my proposal ready to submit; it’s almost certain to be approved because my study doesn’t require any funding, we’re just using instruments the department already has. i’m going to be trying to establish the depositional history of an odd outcrop an hour or two away. the outcrops i’m looking at are directly across a two-lane highway from each other but one side has 7 m less shale than the other, which implies that something odd happened. the rocks present seem to be a transgressive sequence (limestone, sandstone, shale, sandstone, limestone), but i still need to read up on the area to confirm that. it should be interesting to try to figure out what’s going on. i’m going to be using geophysical and primarily geochemical data, and the part i’m most excited about is finally getting to use a pXRF again!! i last (and first) used one on archaeological artifacts in 2022 and i’m excited to apply it to geochemistry. if my results are cool enough i may even get to present at a GSA conference!
  • i think i mentioned this in a recent journal entry but i’m finally medicated for ADHD and it’s already making a huge difference. i’m really hopeful that it makes next semester a lot easier! i’ve also realized a large issue i run into with school is that writing hurts my back, so taking notes on my computer this past semester was a huge help and suddenly i was capable of a lot more. luckily two of my classes next semester are specifically computer-based (computer science 1 and GIS)!
  • i’m hoping to volunteer over the summer and i’m excited to get back into it. i haven’t gotten to volunteer since moving last summer and it’s something that’s important to me, so i really hope i find the time. i want to volunteer at the adult literacy council, i think.
  • i finally start working again tomorrow! i’m rehired for the job i had last august and am allowed to continue working throughout the school year; i can work up to 10 hrs a week and i choose the hours, which rules. it’s a great job and i get to do a lot of organizing, which i love! i’m also looking forward to having some money

current mood: ambitious
current music: tomorrow’s harvest by boards of canada
current beverage: plain old water.. i should get juice at the store later
current activity: taking it easy but hoping to get more done later
goal for today: finish basal metazoans for real this time
i’m looking forward to… having something to turn in!
i’m feeling grateful for… alison :) they did a lot of housework today and i’m very appreciative of the help
notes: i managed to get sick within 24 hours and i’m really struggling to work through it; i did the easy things on my to do list but the brain fog/pain combination is not making getting the important stuff done easy. i want to get better at working even while uncomfortable because i have chronic pain and a compromised immune system, so having to drop everything to feel physically unwell so often ends up being pretty detrimental. in happier news, the optimistic, ambitious confidence has been lingering even on bad days… i think i really am getting better after 4-5 years of struggling to survive
