María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga (1908-1963), usually referred to by the shortened name Remedios Varo, was a Spanish-Mexican surrealist painter known for the mystical elements incorporated throughout her works. She was active from the 30s to the time of her death at the young age of 53. I find the inspiration she takes from medieval aesthetics to blend well with the more modern shapes that give her paintings that dreamlike quality. A really excellent example of her style is in the painting titled Cosmic Energy, painted in 1956 (if you want to take a look, check out my Remedios Varo tag). As a proto-feminist artist, her work is also rich when viewed through a feminist lens. Something of note is that her subjects tend toward androgyny, which I've always appreciated in her art. Personally, my favorite piece of hers is Vegetarian Vampires, painted in 1962.
